First-day move in checklist for your new home in Boston.

Tuesday June 22nd, 12:45pm

Congratulations! You've chosen your new home in Boston, and now you are ready to move in. This is where the work begins! Before you start choosing paint and fabric colors,  there are a few important things you should remember to cross off your checklist before you get started.

Here are 5 priority items to include on your move-in checklist:

1. Change dead bolts on exterior doors. You can find simple "how to" instructions on line or at your local hardware store.

2. Test circuit breakers. You want to avoid overloading circuits, so plug in radios and lamps and test one circuit at a time so you know which outlets are connected to the same circuit. Labeling each breaker-box switch is very helpful.

3. Locate the water shutoff valve. This is very helpful in the case of an emergency!

4. Install new or test existing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Your local fire department can provide you with tips on where to place them.

5. Plug in night-lights around the stairs and in bathrooms. Unfamilar territory can be difficult to navigate in the dark, night lights will help you avoid stumbling around.

Once your checklist is complete, take a break and enjoy your new surroundings! There are plenty of relaxing things to do in Boston, you've earned it!
